UMA dip program options in April
The UMA Dip: Standard
The UMA Dip provides newcomers to dance and beginner movers with options for getting started in a way that is personalized and comfortably paced. There are options for introductory one on one consultations as well as group classes. This is the best option for individuals that want to truly be supported as beginners The UMA Dip: House Dance
House Dance is the dance done to house music. The UMA Dip: House Edition will provide participants with a reliable introductory course to the dance form. We teach house based in the language developed by pioneering Black and Latino dancers in NYC in the late 80s to mid 2000s. The Dip will breakdown how to coordinate the body to the tempo of the music so that your bounce and sway has groove. We will teach mechanics for "jacking" which is the defining rock and bounce in house dance. Mechanics will also be taught for houses' fast and intricate footwork. The class will be organized in a way that supports students with achieving ownership of a set number of vocabulary moves and tools for continued practice. |
NEW UMA Dip: Break Dance Edition
The UMA DIP: Break Dance Edition intends to provide adults with an accessible way to try out one of the most athletic forms of dance. Breakin', commercially known as Break Dance, is hip hop's original dance, created by youth in the Bronx in the early 70s. It is a dance that is normally associated with youth. However, in many ways it is an elixir for youth for all of the OGs that grew up breaking. Although these OGs might not be throwing down with the same intensity, they are kept mobile and vibrant via the dynamic range that the dance requires. The dance comprehensively supports mobility, flexibility, strength and power. NEW UMA Dip: Guapea!
UMA DIP: ¡GUAPEA! Is geared towards folks who are in search of some extra flavor in their day to day through la Salsa Cubana, also known as “Casino”. In this program, folks will learn the history of Casino through conversations, basic steps, and body flow movement exercises that will help folks get comfortable with using their body as a tool to add sazón to their movement vocabulary and partner work. This is an excellent introduction for beginners who are looking to expand their knowledge on and off the dance floor and be awakened by the expansiveness that is la Salsa Cubana! Guapea is offered in both English and Spanish and no partner is required as we will utilize one another in the space. Get ready to work those caderas *hips ;)* and get out on the dance floor! I’m excited to be teaching the vibrant style of Casino to our Philadelphia community and have folks experience one of the foundational styles of Salsa that started in casinos in Cuba and eventually evolved into backyards, streets, and essentially at social gatherings. As a Cuban woman, Salsa is a direct linkage to my culture and family and for that i’m overjoyed to curate a space at UMA where we can learn without judgment, gather with joy, y gozar! This is a playful and supportive environment and all are welcomed. |

Ricky:
Rehearsals Saturdays 4-5:30 @ 2100 Chestnut These dates will be cancelled: March 30 and April 6 These will be make up dates: March 31 and April 7th 2:30-4pm "The performance is going to be a mix of Street Dance styles coming together to the song, "I Am Music" by Common. If you've taken any class with me, you know that I Iike to draw connections between styles, grooves, and patterns. This will be reflected in the show while creating an energy to inspire everyone in the room to move and groove." Rylee: Rehearsals Saturdays 4-5:30 @ 812 Chestnut These dates will be cancelled: March 16th, April 20th and April 27th These dates will be extended until 6:30 to make up : March 23, May 4, May 11 "My piece is going to include Waacking, Vogue, and Heels. I want to emphasize that these are going to be sections this time around rather than fusing the forms. Those that do not dance in heels will just simply not be in the Heels section and if we don't have any heels dancers sign up I'll just be using Waacking and Vogue. The overall theme of the piece "New Era" is quite literally about entering a new era. The piece will explore the idea of transformation, in more words metamorphosis or rebirth. Within the movement, we will specifically explore the experience of finding comfortability in oneself by utilizing the power of feminine energy. We will use the movement forms of Waacking, Vogue, and Heels dance to discover how we can occupy space in this energy and establish confidence for ourselves." |
Alexis:
Rehearsals Sundays 1-2:30 @ 2100 Chestnut *Rehearsals for Alexis won't start until April. There will be 3 make up dates on Tuesdays April 2, 9 and 16 from 9-10pm @ 2100 Chestnut in addition to the Sunday rehearsals those weeks "Creating a multidimensional Party Scene!Utilizing influences of Hip Hop, Street Jazz, House, & Vogue; Looking forward to working with a group that's open to showcasing vibrant personality, moments of intricacy, embracing versatility, & dynamic shifts in energy!" Lady Perez: Rehearsals Fridays 6-7:30 @ 2100 Chestnut "This piece will be centered around the style of waacking. It will showcase many of the aspects of the style, including, but definitely not limited to, its arm movements. The soundtrack will be upbeat, fun, and flashy, and there will be a specific focus on showcasing musicality through waacking." Marcus: Rehearsals Sundays 1:30-3 @ 812 Chestnut The show would be named “Lock Box”. The show would be centered around concepts, moves and groove that are considered as lost arts Forms of the Campbellock dance style aka Locking. The show will take a deep dive in the concepts moves such as hats tricks, handkerchief moves, kill the roach, Give five, handshakes and more. The hope is to bring more attention and understanding to the communal statement that Cambellocking made in 70’s. |

MoveMakers Philly is our affiliated youth program. MoveMakers Philly and UMA are financially tied- so supporting one organization supports the other. Dope! MoveMakers Philly is launching their 2023/2024 fundraising campaign to help underserved youth attend MoveMakers programming. Check it out below!
Help us raise $25,000 this Winter to support:
MoveMakers Philly in Philadelphia School District Classrooms
Performances for Philadelphia Schools
Anti-violence and Anti-bullying workshops
Music programs for Philadelphia Schools
We are thrilled to launch our 3rd annual Winter fundraiser to support programming for underserved youth in Philadelphia. Our work has grown and become more robust each year. In the Spring of 2021, we started with our first summer camp scholarship fundraiser. Last year, we grew to serve 250 students per week in Philadelphia School District (PSD) classrooms, an amount of children that exceeds those that attend MoveMakers as paying members. This is a major accomplishment. We also provided educational performance to over 2000 kids across various schools in Philly in 2023. We are motivated to keep raising the bar in how we serve Philly youth and public schools.

Hip Hop/ Street Jazz Choreo
|
A Note from Kristi about the class:
My class is an intermediate choreography class, but I hope no one feels intimidated by the intermediate label. While it is geared towards dancers with experience picking up choreography, anyone down to get down and open to a challenge is welcome! Warmup begins with bopping around the room to get acquainted with our bodies, the space, and each other. Then we’ll work on our groove, isolations, and textures. After that, we’ll learn a combo! I like to mix grooves with somewhat technical isolations, and that balance can be hard to execute (even for me!). The expectation is NOT to get the choreography perfectly. While I won’t break down foundational moves (UMA already has dozens of amazing classes that teach the street dance vocabularies my choreography takes from—and you’ll see me in those classes too!), I will offer options. For example, if a glide isn’t in your dance toolbox yet, taking two steps is a great substitution! For me, learning a combo in an hour-long class isn’t about getting all the moves exactly. It’s more a way for us all to get on the same page emotionally and have common ground as we share our interpretations of a song. Within the framework of the choreography, there’s so much room for creativity (that’s where the groove, isolations, and textural exercises from warmup come in!), so individualization is highly encouraged! I love seeing people put their unique spin on the choreo to let their personalities shine through! |
