Urban Movement Arts (UMA) offers dance education and performance opportunities to adults in Philadelphia, shining a light on Black American social dance idioms like hip hop, lindy hop, vogue and rollerskating. This summer UMA and Brian Sanders JUNK will join forces to offer a training intensive unlike any other. A cohort of UMA teaching artists will collaborate with Brain Sanders with the intention of engaging Black American vernacular dances with the choreographic stylings of Brian Sanders that stretch modern and classical technique into dare-devilish physical play cropped inside stage sets of otherworldly and extraordinary design. This unlikely combination of culture and artistry offers pre-professional and professional dancers the opportunity to work in an environment that will push and develop their sensibilities and capacities in training, creation and collaboration. Too often, barriers and delineations are perpetuated between genre and form. UMA and Brian Sanders JUNK, in their 2022 Summer collaboration, endeavour to explore and demonstrate the many fruitful possibilities that are made possible by crossing barriers and encouraging new dialogues.
Description:
Brian will collaborate with four different teaching artists between July 18th and 29th, including Snack Break Movement Arts (Emily P. + Josh C.), Rylee Locker, Ron Wood and India Bernardino. Each collaboration is a feature workshop that is divided into a technical class at 10am, followed by a choreographic workshop at 11:30 am each day. There are a variety of options for participation explained below. Each Choreographic workshop will culminate with a showing of material generated and presented in the parties on Fridays July 22 and 29th at 8 pm at the end of each workshop week. So all participants in full workshops will have the opportunity to perform works learned. Note that in order to participate in the choreographic workshop, participants must also be present for the technical class of each option. |
