About the Program
Urban Movement Arts is devoted to enriching lives with the benefits of dance. We know that there are individuals in the 50+ age group interested in dance, but we do not see many of these folks in class. The Wise and Groovy Series is our effort to serve individuals 50 and up.
As much as it is our ideal to have various age groups dancing together, we understand that there difference in taste, preference, pace and more can sometimes prevent everyone in a wide ranging age group from achieving full enjoyment. We hope that by offering a class that supports adults 50+, more individuals in this age group will thrive within the UMA community.
Although folks 50+ are the main for focus for the class, we even welcome folks in their late 30s and 40s that relate better to more mature individuals than folks in their 20s. We hope that folks well into their 70s and 80s will be enticed by this class option. If we gain traction, we will launch classes specifically for seniors.
We are adamant that folks 50+ are interested in more than Zumba and dance fitness classes. We truly believe that there are folks in this age range that would love to learn street dance culture and expression while receiving all of the benefits of dancing. If you imagine this for yourself, then this is the class program for you.
We envision that many of the individuals that start this journey with us will gain confidence and more curiosity as they develop new skills and increased agility and more attributes. It wouldn’t surprise us if this program becomes a gateway for participating in UMA’s general programs. Afterall, although they are a minority we have students ranging between 50 and 80 who frequent classes with folks mostly in their 20s and early 30s.
If the idea of a program like this is speaking with you, do not hesitate. Sign up!

Class Descriptions- Starting January 6th
Lunchtime Dance Grooves (Street Dance for ages 50 and Up)
Thursdays at 12pm (TUESDAY CLASS IS PAUSED)
Range of Motion
812 Chestnut Street
Lunchtime Dance Grooves is a fun class set to funk, house and hip hop music. Along with providing great exercise and fun, the classes teach skills related to street dance. Dancers that frequent these classes will develop into street dancers, capable of performing choreography and freestyling (improvising). There are a ton of proven benefits associated with dancing in adulthood. The skill acquisition combined with the cultural immersion and exercise make the adult dance experience at UMA more impactful than your average dance fitness class. Come groove, bust a move and have fun time in Lunch Time Dance Grooves.
Mobility/ Strength/ Flexibility (Conditioning for ages 50 and Up)
Thursdays at 11am
Range of Motion
812 Chestnut Street
Mobility, Strength and Flexibility are key in all stages of adulthood. Often standard gym workouts approach our capacities as movers one dimensionally. Yoga and Stretch classes often limit practices to static sequences. At Range of Motion, we aim to support participants with developing deeper relationships with their bodies resulting in more dexterity and adaptability. Our approach is interdisciplinary, applying conventional strength and flexibility exercises that all know well, while incorporating lesser practiced mobility exercises, relevant dance exercises and low impact acrobatics. For the 50+ age group, our goal is to support individuals with feeling more supple, open, graceful and strong. We approach a class like this with the intention of leaving you feeling activated, awakened, engaged and more capable at the end, opposed to worked out and beat up. Our practice aims to leave you feeling supported for all endeavors. Come move with us!
