UMA teacher training program
UMA’s Teacher Training and Professional Development Intensive is for individuals 18 and up who are considering careers or are emerging professionals in American Street Dance. This program is an immense resource to individuals that attend colleges and universities in the Philadelphia region.
Pedagogical practices in American Street Dance is the central focus of this intensive. UMA’s team strongly believes that the skills for being an impactful educator translate to what’s needed for being successful in the multitude of performance arenas available to American Street Dancers. The skills needed to effectively teach also translate to success in personal organization, teamwork and leadership. And along with offering workshops on teaching methods and systems, the intensive covers workshops that support successful employment as an American Street Dance Educator as well as tools for entrepreneurship. UMA’s teacher training will explore various systems of learning ranging from classroom based to oral transmission to media transposition. While exploring various systems of learning, participants will enjoy training in foundational styles, including hip hop, breaking, popping, locking, waacking, house and more. In the spirit of UMA’s mission to serve a diverse population of people, our teacher training offers workshops for developing skills for youth education and adult education, providing tools for successfully serving individuals of all levels as well as being equipped to support various learning styles and differences. UMA’s Teacher Training and Professional Development Intensive aims to give you a competitive edge in the workforce as an American Street Dance Educator. |

An Advance Training Intensive For Teens Interested in American Street Dance Practice and Culture
All Levels of Dance are Welcome from Absolute Beginner to Advanced Practitioners
Ages 13 and up
All Levels of Dance are Welcome from Absolute Beginner to Advanced Practitioners
Ages 13 and up
This summer intensive in collaboration with MoveMakers Philly and Philly Music Factory is designed for middle schoolers and high schoolers that have a deep passion for American Street Dance, which includes breaking and hip hop.
However, this is not your ordinary summer dance intensive, like those that you might find advertised in Dance Spirit Magazine or even legacy workshops held by Street Dance subculture aficionados, like Illadelph Legends. Both of the aforementioned are invaluable tools for passionate dance enthusiasts and aspiring dance professionals. Although UMA's intensive will cover some aspects of what each of the aforementioned resources offer, it presents a completely innovative approach to providing tools to young people who care deeply about American Street Dance, or any relic of Black American cultural ingenuity.. |

UMA dip program options in April
The UMA Dip: Standard
The UMA Dip provides newcomers to dance and beginner movers with options for getting started in a way that is personalized and comfortably paced. There are options for introductory one on one consultations as well as group classes. This is the best option for individuals that want to truly be supported as beginners The UMA Dip: House Dance
House Dance is the dance done to house music. The UMA Dip: House Edition will provide participants with a reliable introductory course to the dance form. We teach house based in the language developed by pioneering Black and Latino dancers in NYC in the late 80s to mid 2000s. The Dip will breakdown how to coordinate the body to the tempo of the music so that your bounce and sway has groove. We will teach mechanics for "jacking" which is the defining rock and bounce in house dance. Mechanics will also be taught for houses' fast and intricate footwork. The class will be organized in a way that supports students with achieving ownership of a set number of vocabulary moves and tools for continued practice. |
NEW UMA Dip: Break Dance Edition
The UMA DIP: Break Dance Edition intends to provide adults with an accessible way to try out one of the most athletic forms of dance. Breakin', commercially known as Break Dance, is hip hop's original dance, created by youth in the Bronx in the early 70s. It is a dance that is normally associated with youth. However, in many ways it is an elixir for youth for all of the OGs that grew up breaking. Although these OGs might not be throwing down with the same intensity, they are kept mobile and vibrant via the dynamic range that the dance requires. The dance comprehensively supports mobility, flexibility, strength and power. The UMA Acrobatic Dip: Aerials
Time to Take Flight! In this UMA Acrobatic Dip Series we tak a confident leap into world of the no-handed cartwheel, aka the aerial. One of the main feats of flight when it comes to foundational acrobatic skills. In this class, we begin with the mobility and strength exercises for the lower body that increase range of motion necessary for a strong, sharp, and speedy aerial. From there we expand our spatial awareness of getting comfortable from transition to a standing position to inverting upside down with no hands in a slow, safe, and methodical manner. The fun continues with basic acrobatic drills for the aerial. Nervous about cartwheeling with no hands? No worries! There are many landmarks and achievements that you will discover along the way to the aerial that will add some extra spice to your movement practice such as the one-arm cartwheel, illusion, and butterfly. Alex supports a welcoming and playful environment by helping you be cool with the initial uncertainties and awkwardness that come with learning a new task. All are welcome to explore! |

Say Yes Philly!
Say Yes Philly! our network’s non-profit partner is officially open! It has been a long time coming. Have you been following the journey?
Since 2021, MoveMakers Philly and Urban Movement Arts have been growing charitable efforts via providing dance learning to underserved youth. We started with our I Am The Move! summer camp scholarship in 2021. In 2022, we took I Am The Move into the Philadelphia School District. We are proud of the various achievements that we’ve been able to make since starting this work:
-Offered class to 250 PSD students weekly January-June 2023 (up about 100 from the previous year)
-Provided hip hop dance history performances to 2,000+ students attending PSD schools.
-We provided 30 MoveMakers Philly summer camp scholarships for in 2023, allowing all 30 participants to attend for 10 weeks of camp.
-92% of families expressed that MoveMakers camp helped increase their child’s self-confidence.
In 2024, Philly Music Factory launched Play It Forward Orchestra, which brings together a diverse group of Philadelphia youth representing different neighborhoods, experience levels and ages to learn and perform music together. In our first year, we’re working with a group of 11 kids (5 with experience and 6 with no music experience). We’ve been able to donate instruments to the newcomers to music learning.
Our network of for-profit businesses have been able to expand into charitable work due to your support over the past 3 years. We’ve made a significant impact on many lives because of your help. We are also thankful to our fiscal sponsor, Archedream For Humankind, who has helped to make your donations tax deductible.
We are extremely proud to announce the opening of Say Yes Philly!, our official non-profit partner. Say Yes Philly opens new pathways for our network to expand its outreach mission. Along with providing art education to underserved families, we’ve actively operated as a art resources center, separate from the for-profit operation. UMA’s Artist in Residency program as well as PMF’s Free Range concert series are two prominent examples of this work. Say Yes Philly paves the way for us to pursue more avenues for funding youth education and artist support.
Let’s make our work together in 2024/2025 the most powerful that we’ve had yet.
Stay tuned for info on how to support!
