Uma Dip: macaco madnessDive deep in the DIP! This beginner acrobatics DIP class will focus on the itty-bitty basics of a sound macaco. In this class, we will begin with mobility on the wrists, shoulders, and hips to increase the range of motion necessary for a clean macaco, specifically the bridge position. From there, we expand our spatial awareness of the transition from a squat to inverting on our hands in a slow, safe, and methodical manner. The fun continues with basic acrobatic drills for the Macaco.
Nervous about going for the big flip?? No worries! There are many landmarks and achievements that you will discover along the way to the macaco that will add some extra spice to your movement practice. Alex supports a welcoming and playful environment by helping you be cool with the initial uncertainties and awkwardness that come with learning a new task. All are welcome to explore! uma dip: break dance editionThe UMA DIP: Break Dance Edition intends to provide adults with an accessible way to try out one of the most athletic forms of dance. Breakin', commercially known as Break Dance, is hip hop's original dance, created by youth in the Bronx in the early 70s. It is a dance that is normally associated with youth. However, in many ways it is an elixir for youth for all of the OGs that grew up breaking. Although these OGs might not be throwing down with the same intensity, they are kept mobile and vibrant via the dynamic range that the dance requires. The dance comprehensively supports mobility, flexibility, strength and power.

uma dip: House danceHouse Dance is the dance done to house music. The UMA Dip: House Edition will provide participants with a reliable introductory course to the dance form. We teach house based in the language developed by pioneering Black and Latino dancers in NYC in the late 80s to mid 2000s. The Dip will breakdown how to coordinate the body to the tempo of the music so that your bounce and sway has groove. We will teach mechanics for "jacking" which is the defining rock and bounce in house dance. Mechanics will also be taught for houses' fast and intricate footwork. The class will be organized in a way that supports students with achieving ownership of a set number of vocabulary moves and tools for continued practice.
uma dip: guapeaUMA DIP: ¡GUAPEA! Is geared towards folks who are in search of some extra flavor in their day to day through la Salsa Cubana, also known as “Casino”. In this program, folks will learn the history of Casino through conversations, basic steps, and body flow movement exercises that will help folks get comfortable with using their body as a tool to add sazón to their movement vocabulary and partner work. This is an excellent introduction for beginners who are looking to expand their knowledge on and off the dance floor and be awakened by the expansiveness that is la Salsa Cubana! Guapea is offered in both English and Spanish and no partner is required as we will utilize one another in the space. Get ready to work those caderas *hips ;)* and get out on the dance floor!

What is the UMA Dip and Why Should You Take It?
A Google search for Beginner Dance Classes will certainly generate many results. But the percentage of these options that are truly a beginner experience will likely be low. In most cases, a Beginner Dance Class means that the moves are more basic than those taught in a more advanced class. The result is that most Beginner Dance Classes advertised are not actually teaching newcomers how to dance and particularly how to orient and prepare themselves to have a sustainable practice as dancers.
The UMA Dip is a program designed for newcomers to dance who want a comprehensive introduction to dance. There is much more that goes into dance than following along to steps and choreography of a teacher. The UMA Dip gives students the opportunity to truly explore what goes into being a dancer and to ultimately establish a practice for themselves.
The UMA Dip will cover the following:
Body Preparation: how to condition one's body to perform the feats that are presented in a dance class, working on balance, flexibility, agility, mobility and strength.
Body Awareness: Understanding functional mobility concepts, how to sense yourself in space and in relation to rhythm, how to transpose the choreography of another onto your own body.
Tools for class participation: Understanding how to orient oneself in class in order to follow the teacher and retain information taught.
UMA lineup overview: We will provide you with a general sense of the various dance forms taught at UMA, so that you can enter classes with requisite knowledge.
Form: How to distinguish different forms; for example, being able to tell the difference between hip hop and house dance, understanding the unique demands of each. Ultimately, the goal is to develop an understanding of how to adapt oneself to move within the structures of a particular form.
Expression: Developing a sense of how to produce affectation within the dance form practiced, understanding common trops within the form, while tapping into your own unique expression.
Tools for practice: We will provide you with insights on how to develop your own practice, taking ownership of the material that you learn so that you can truly have a sense of yourself as a dancer.
Cultural Understanding: All of the dance forms taught at UMA have been generated from folkloric practices. We will provide historical and cultural context for what you are learning.
The UMA Dip will concentrate on preparing students to be successful with UMA’s line up of classes. However, completing the UMA Dip programming will provide you with tools to be successful in dance forms that we don’t teach, supporting you to be successful in dance no matter where or how you practice. After the UMA Dip you will have a better sense of yourself as a mover in general.
