UMA provides free practice space for several internationally recognized Philly based crews.
In some moments, it even seems like aaaaallll of the business labors exist so crews have a place to train and the dance theater staff can make whatever the f*ck they want, inviting an audience into their house, where they can do things their own way.
Vince Johnson/Philly Kerplop
In addition to the many things UMA & Movemakers does, it is also a space for Director Vince Johnson to keep creating and performing. From UMA, he runs and operates Philly Kerplop, a dance and music performance ensemble both absurd and for real. With Kerplop, Vince Johnson has created six original shows since 2018. Philly Kerplop often performs with musicians from Philly Music Factory, with whom UMA shares studio space.
Lily Kind/Wolfthicket
UMA is also a home for the dance theater projects of Lily Kind. Lily's crew of performers, who train and rehearse at UMA, are collectively known as "the Wolfthicket", the name of the work she has been developing at UMA since 2016 (before it was UMA!). Lily's has also premiered two works produced with UMA, Indestructable Flowers with Mark Wong in 2018 and Bolero at Workinonit: Deluxe in June 2019. Lily also co-directs Ragtag Empire, which operates the vernacular jazz and swing dance programs at UMA.
Mark Wong /Hip Hop Fundamentals
UMA hosts and produces the work of HHF co-founder BBoy Mark Wong. Mark has created two original fringe shows for the UMA studios. Indestructable Flowers with Lily Kind in 2018 and You are Not a Shining Star ft. Vince Johnson in 2019.
